The National Park Service began looking for a better route soon after the Fall River Road opened in 1920. Construction began in 1929 on what would become the highest continuous paved highway in North America. The Trail Ridge Road, also designated as U.S. Highway 34, reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet. Completed in 1932, the road introduces Rocky Mountain motorists to boundless alpine vistas.
